Only a half hour drive from Arusha, and one hour from our camp at Ndarakwai, the park is divided into three main areas; the Ngurdoto Crater, Momela Lake, and Mount Meru (4566 or about 15,000 feet). The showy black and white Colobus monkey is one of the parks main attractions. Herds of Cape buffalo graze the crater's marshy floor.

In 1950's Hollywood used the park and its lodge as the setting for the John Wayne classic "Hatari!" The park is a lovely starting point for those interested in climbing the very vertical Mt Meru, a volcano that last erupted about 250,000 years ago. It is one of the few Parks in Tanzania where you have the opportunity to hike, and even if you do not want to get to the top, you can spend an enjoyable day walking up the trail through the forest.

Accessible all year round, though April and May - the rainy season - a four-wheel drive vehicle may be required.

We mostly visit Arusha National Park as a half-day visit from Arusha or on the way to Arusha from Ndarakwai.
